The Making of the Ocean Series
From a simple sheet of glass to a dimensional ocean sculpture, every Ocean Series piece is individually hand-carved in Bobby’s Art Studio.
Each artwork begins as a concept inspired by the movement, power, and beauty of the sea. Through multiple stages of stencil design, sand carving, and hand finishing, ordinary glass is transformed into a sculptural work of art that captures light, depth, and motion.
The Ocean Series is influenced by the ever-changing beauty of coastal waters. From rolling waves and sea turtles to coral reefs and marine life, each design begins with a vision of a moment in nature.
The goal is not simply to decorate glass—but to create depth, movement, and emotion that changes as light passes through the sculpture.
Digital Artwork Design
Every Ocean Series piece starts as an original illustration.
Multiple carving layers are carefully planned to determine:
- Foreground elements
- Mid-level carving depths
- Deep background carving
- Highlights and shadows
- Areas that will catch and reflect light
The artwork is separated into multiple stencil layers that guide the carving process.
Creating the Stencils
Specialized sand-carving resist material is cut and applied to the glass.
Each layer acts as a protective mask, allowing only selected areas to be carved during each stage of the process.
This step determines the depth and dimensionality of the final artwork.
Carving the Glass
This is where the transformation begins.
Using professional sand-carving equipment, the glass is sculpted layer by layer.
Each carving stage removes a different amount of material, creating:
- Deep ocean backgrounds
- Raised marine life
- Rolling waves
- Dimensional textures
- Light-catching details
A single piece may require multiple carving stages before completion.
Finishing and Inspection
After carving is complete, the stencils are removed and the piece is thoroughly cleaned and inspected.
Every artwork is examined to ensure:
- Clean carving transitions
- Proper depthExceptional clarity
- Consistent quality
Only then is it signed and prepared for presentation.
The Result
The final Ocean Series artwork combines sculpture, illustration, and light into a single piece.
Unlike printed artwork, the image exists within the surface of the glass itself. As lighting changes throughout the day, new details emerge and the artwork takes on a different character.
Each piece is individually handcrafted and may require many hours of design and carving to complete.
